2011-2012 EXAMS AND EXAM WEEK

The Ministry of Education announced the elimination of Optional Exams in all Grade 12 courses beginning this school year 2011-2012. Students are now only required to write five provincial exams: Science 10, English 10, selected Math 10, Social Studies 11, English 12 (or First Nations 12 or Français Langue). This Ministry of Education change has greatly reduced the amount of exam time required for Ministry exams.

Traditionally, Nanaimo-Ladysmith secondary schools used exam weeks for students to write provincial exams and other grade-level curricular exams. With the Ministry’s elimination of optional exams, students will now be required to remain in classes during the previously scheduled exam week.

In the past, students who were not writing exams were not expected to be at school. This is no longer the case. This change will allow teachers to continue to work with students for additional classes and to explore other types of assessment for students to demonstrate their understanding of the curriculum.

The previously-scheduled Exam weeks for secondary schools in School District 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) were at the end of first semester, Monday through Friday, January 23-27, as well as at the end of the second semester, June 18-26. Beginning this year, these days will now be scheduled as instructional days and students will be in attendance with their regular classroom teachers, and full attendance will be taken. Students writing the compulsory exams will be excused from their regular classes to write their exams.

The provincial exam schedule is posted below. Further details about arrangements for the last week of January will be available later this month.
